I have been writing poetry and drawing for about as long as I can remember,
but I had no interest in writing as a career when I was younger. I was 30
years old before the thought of writing a book entered my mind. That was
when I wrote the poem that became my first book, "Help Save Our Home with Envirodoc". It lay in a drawer, as just a poem for the first couple of
years. Then, after a little coaxing & coaching by my mother, I illustrated it
and sent a mock-up off to a few publishers.
I soon realized though, that if my little book was ever going to be published,
I would probably have to do it myself. So in 1992, I decided to self-publish.
It was just a small print run and within the first year they were nearly all gone.
The feedback I received about the book encouraged me to do the same with
one of my other poems, "The Day After Christmas" .
Since then, I have written, illustrated and published close to one book per
year, under Rhyme For Reason, the small company I began when I
published my first book. I also publish my mother's Art/History books under
Rhyme For Reason.
I write all of my books in rhyme and do all of my own illustrations. Most of
my writing is nature related, featuring Inspector McTree, a character I created
in my third book, "A Trip Through Time With Inspector McTree". During the
past few of years, I have been writing in the area of child health and safety,
starting a new series with Edward the Awarebear. This series covers such topics
as bullying, drug awareness, child abuse, feelings, foster care and adoption.
Below are pictures of some of my school visits while on a tour through
Newfoundland and Labrador, with Newfoundland Forest and Agrifoods.
